Terror on Jerusalem's light rail

Thursday, March 15, 2012 |  Ryan Jones

A 19-year-old female Israeli soldier was stabbed multiple times and seriously wounded by a Palestinian Arab assailant aboard Jerusalem's new light rail transit system on Thursday morning.

The attack occurred near the northern end of the light rail's route as it passes through the Arab neighborhood of Beit Hanina. A short time later police arrested the man they believe to be behind the attack as he made his way through a checkpoint leading from Jerusalem to Palestinian Authority-controlled areas.

An eyewitness recounted the heartbreaking scene for the Ynet news portal:

"I was sitting on the train, there were no screams or anything to indicate something had happened. When I looked back I suddenly saw a commotion and as I approached I saw the young woman bleeding. She mumbled, 'why did this happen to me.'"

The victim is at a Jerusalem hospital suffering from serious stab wounds to her chest.

The Jerusalem Municipality temporarily cancelled train service to northern Jerusalem in the wake of the attack. Critics of the light rail project long warned that it would be nearly impossible to protect passengers from stabbings, shootings and bombings aboard the largely unmonitored trains.
