Radical leftists to honor Palestinian terrorists on Memorial Day

While the vast majority of Israelis will be remembering their nation's fallen - both soldiers and victims of terrorism - on Wednesday, a small group of radical left-wing activists will be holding an alternative Memorial Day ceremony that will also honor fallen "Palestinian combatants," many of them blood-soaked terrorists.

The "Combatants for Peace" Memorial Day ceremony has actually been taking place for seven years. At the yearly event, bereaved Israeli families come together with invited bereaved Palestinian families. The difference is that many of those Palestinian families are mourning loved ones who died while attacking Israeli civilians, including children.

For the past two years, a group of Israeli Jews have gathered at the ceremony to protest what they call the desecration of Israel's Memorial Day.

One protestor, Nissim Eliyahu, told Israel National News that he would have no problem with the format of the event if it were commemorating Arab soldiers who fell in legitimate battle against Israel. "Unfortunately, this is not the case," said Eliyahu, who noted that last year's ceremony included references to the Palestinian terrorist uprising that claimed the lives of hundreds of Israeli civilians, and to the "catastrophe" of the Jewish state's rebirth.

A spokesman for Combatants for Peace responded to the media criticism by insisting that "no one in Israel...has a monopoly on grief and pain."

Right or wrong, this alternative Memorial Day ceremony once again demonstrates, contrary to the claims of its antagonists, that Israel is a truly open and free society where even the most strident enemies of the Jewish state are given ear, and their deaths are grieved over.
