Vanunu indicted

The man who blew the whistle on Israel’s nuclear weapons program, Mordechai Vanunu, has been indicted for violating the terms of his release from prison. Vanunu was freed last April after serving an 18-year sentence for espionage and treason. A former technician at Israel’s nuclear facility in the Negev desert town of Dimona, Vanunu gave pictures and documents about Israel’s atomic weapons program to the “Sunday Times” of London. A defiant Vanunu ignored the terms of his release which barred him from contact with foreigners and the press on grounds that he could spill more secrets and harm state security. Vanunu, a convert to Christianity, gave many media interviews and has been living among foreigners at an Anglican Church compound here in Jerusalem.
