BMW cars for Ministers of State?

Tuesday, July 17, 2012 |  Michael Selutin

The division for government vehicles of Israel’s government decided to pamper Ministers and other high-ranking persons with new vehicles, which will replace the currently used Audi A6. For this reason, a bid invitation was conducted and the winner was BMW. Thus, the BMW 528 should have been bought, which was harshly criticized. This car is the most expensive one of the available choice and will cost 82,000 Euros (which is approximately 100,845 US dollars or 400,000 NIS). Scheli Jechimovitch, the opposition leader and Chair-woman of the Labor Party was not surprised about this and said that the choice of the most expensive car was a clear signal showing the prestige-oriented attitude and shameless behavior of the government. “The government is absolutely isolated from the citizens and their concerns, to whose well-being the government should contribute, actually, “ said Jechimovitch. 50 cars of that kind would cost 4.1 million Euros (which is almost 5.1 million US dollars or 20 million NIS). Ministers who did not want a fancy car were offered a Citroen C5. The Ministry of Finance announced that the purchasing contract with BMW is not signed yet and that even the Minister of Finance, Mr. Steinitz, was against the fact that Ministers of the government have luxury cars. Although an alternative solution to this choice is being searched for, it may be the case that it would be even more expensive to cancel this order and to purchase other vehicles, because those BMWs were offered at a huge discount.
