A tale of two photos: Israeli and Palestinian education toward 'peace'

Wednesday, August 22, 2012 |  Ryan Jones

Last weekend Muslims marked their holy day of Eid al-Fitr, the breaking of the Ramadan fast. A handful of photos taken in different parts of Israel on that occasion demonstrate just how well Israeli and Palestinian societies, respectively, have, in general, educated their people for peaceful coexistence.

You see, one of the primary obligations of the original "Oslo Accords" was that both Israelis and Palestinians would actively educate their populations to respect and desire peace with one another.

Israel certainly has not been perfect in that regard, but Israeli schools do teach peace and even encourage students to see the Palestinian point of view, while Israeli society in general angrily rejects outbursts of hostility toward the Palestinians.

On the other hand, the Palestinian Authority has actually introduced efforts to educate its young people to view Israel's Jews as blood-thirsty usurpers, and regularly honors Palestinians who sacrifice their own lives to murder Jewish men, women and children.

The fruits of those two approaches can be seen in the following Eil al-Fitr news photos. In the first, which was published by Israel's Yediot Ahronot newspaper, Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria - the internationally-reviled "settlers" - are seen handing out candies and wishing "Happy Holiday" to Muslim shoppers leaving local supermarkets.

In the second, Arab children in Gaza are shown similarly passing out candies to masked gunmen from Islamic Jihad, one of the groups behind the regular rocket attacks on southern Israel.

That photo was part of a series posted to the Islamic Jihad website, where one gunman was quoted as thanking the mothers of the children for encouraging and bolstering the jihad.
