Ethiopian immigrants thank Israel Today readers

Thursday, September 20, 2012 |  Israel Today Staff

Jewish immigrants from Ethiopia - a long-lost tribe of Israel, if you will - have been streaming home for decades now. But their transition is rarely easy.

Despite the joy of living in a time that they can return to the land of their forefathers, Israel's Ethiopian immigrants typically arrive with little more than the shirts on their backs. They must also integrate into a new society that is far more different from what they are used to than it is for, say, immigrants from America or Europe.

That makes many of these Ethiopians the most needy of Israel's citizens, and the state strains under the weight of providing assistance, while at the same time dedicating itself to bring all Jews home.

That is where organizations like Israel Today gladly step in and provide the support and hope these precious Jewish souls need as they again become one with the Jewish state.

Thanks to the generosity of our readers, last week we were able to provide food baskets to 70 Ethiopian immigrant families at the absorption center in the Jerusalem suburb of Mevasseret Zion. Their letter of thanks is below.

Not only does this provide the kind of assistance to the poor of Israel that we are commanded to, but it is a powerful testimony of Christian love for the Jewish people in these days.

Letter of thanks:

Shalom,

We want to express our thanks and great appreciation in the name of the many new immigrants from Ethiopia and of the staff of the Mevasseret Zion Absorption Center for the generous contribution of food baskets for the immigrants.

Like every year when we receive the food baskets, both the physical contribution and the experience of generosity has touched the families of the immigrants.

May the past year and its challenges give way to a new year of prosperity, blessing and opportunity. Shana Tovah.

May we continue to have fruitful partnership.

Blessings,
The Staff of the Mevasseret Zion Absorption Center
