The Clash of Civilizations

Culture and religion collide—that’s the only way to understand the violent protests in the Islamic world against the American-produced movie that mocks the Prophet Mohammed.

Over 20 years ago, American political scientist Samuel Huntington predicted a Clash of Civilizations. In his book of the same name, Huntington describes a cultural war between Islam and the Christian West. At that time, he was sharply criticised by liberals who thought that Islam would adapt to the rest of the world. People believed that “globalization will eradicate all cultural differences.”

But the recent Arab Spring shattered Western hopes that freedom and democracy would eventually win the day in the Middle East. Some 1.3 millionMuslims are citizens of the State of Israel. Ironically, they might be the only Muslims who enjoy true democracy in their native country.

Israel Today spoke about these issues with two leaders of the radical Islamic Movement in Israel, Sheikh Abdullah Nimr Darwish and Sheikh Kamal Khatib.
