9 Israeli police hurt in Jerusalem riot

Thursday, November 08, 2012 |  Ryan Jones

Nine Israeli Border Police officers were wounded during a riot in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat on the eastern side of Jerusalem on Tuesday evening.

The violence began when local Arabs became aware that two plain clothes observers were actually undercover Israeli police officers. The mob proceeded to stone the two men, and one young Arab stabbed an officer in the back.

A larger Border Police force was on the scene in minutes, and also came under heavy attack. Two men were arrested, including a 17-year-old Arab youth suspected of stabbing the wounded undercover officer.

All of the wounded were evacuated to Jerusalem hospitals with light to moderate injuries.

Antagonists on the Arab side often accuse Israel of not providing the same security and services to Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem as they do to Jewish neighborhoods. But the truth is that attacks on Israeli police and ambulances are not uncommon, leaving little desire or incentive to brave those areas.
