Easter Holy Week begins on a peaceful note

Sunday, March 20, 2005 |

Pilgrims from around the world celebrated Palm Sunday here in the city where it all happened. Waving palm and olive branches, they marked Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey nearly 2,000 years ago. Holy Week began at dawn as bells peeled at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the traditional site of the crucifixion and resurrection. Worshippers marched in procession through a cloud of incense, led by white-robed priests and monks chanting the Latin liturgy. The highlight was the traditional Palm Sunday procession on the Mount of Olives, with a breathtaking view of the Old City below. The stabilizing security situation and the Mideast cease-fire brought the best turnout in years. And Jerusalem enjoyed a rare day of peace blessed by the prayers of the faithful.
