Government tries to preempt settler protests against pullout

Monday, March 21, 2005 |

The army has barred Israeli citizens from moving to the 21 settlements in the Gaza Strip and the four in northern Samaria that are slated for evacuation under the government’s withdrawal plan. Officials fear that tens of thousands of settlers will try to move to these areas to resist the evacuation, which is scheduled to begin in July. In about a month, the army is expected to declare these areas closed military zones, which means that no one can go there without special permission.
