Israel pulls out of Tulkarem

Palestinian police are in full control of the town of Tulkarem in Samaria for the first time since fighting erupted four and a half years ago, after the Israeli army pulled out. Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom says its now up to the Palestinians to stop terrorism. “We would like to believe that the Palestinians…will do everything to prevent those extremists from carrying out more attacks against us,” Shalom said. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas faces a crucial test--controlling the terrorists bent on sabotaging the peace process. At last month’s landmark summit in Egypt, Israel agreed to pull out of five towns in Judea and Samaria to strengthen the cease-fire. Israel pulled out of Biblical Jericho last week, and it plans to withdraw from the town of Kalkilya next week.
