Four dead in rare Israel bank robbery

Monday, May 20, 2013 |  Israel Today Staff

At least four people were killed on Monday during a bank robbery in the southern Israel city of Beersheva.

According to Hebrew media, the thieves entered a local branch of Bank Hapoalim around noon and threatened the staff and customers with guns.

Police showed up a short time later, sparking a standoff that included at least one robber barricading himself with hostages.

At least one of the robbers was killed during the standoff, presumably by his own hand. It was not clear if that robber was among the published body count.

Armed bank robberies are relatively rare in Israel, though organized crime has been increasing in recent years.
