Settlers block roads

Wednesday, March 23, 2005 |

Jewish settlers are stepping up their civil disobedience campaign, and they blocked major roads during rush hour again last night. The protests took place near Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the coastal city of Netanya. Demonstrators burned tires and carried banners condemning the Gaza pullout. Police quickly restored order, but not before there were huge traffic jams. About 100 people were arrested, but most were later released. The protests are expected to become more frequent and violent as the withdrawal approaches.
