Temple Mount confrontation looming

Wednesday, March 23, 2005 |

Israeli police and Jewish militants are headed for a confrontation at the hotly disputed Temple Mount here in Jerusalem. Police say they'll prevent about 30 right-wing Jewish groups from holding a mass rally at the site, in an attempt to thwart the government's plan to pull out of Gaza. Protests at the Temple Mount could spark Palestinian violence because the site is also home to the Mosque of Al Aksa, the third holiest place in Islam. These Jewish groups hope that the police and army will be so bogged down trying to keep order that they won't have the manpower to remove settlers from Gaza.
