Palestinian lawmakers at Israel's Knesset

As renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks got underway in Washington, a delegation of Palestinian Authority parliamentarians visited Israel's Knesset on Wednesday to give an additional push to the negotiations.

Opening a session of the Knesset Caucus on Ending the Israeli-Arab Conflict, MK Merav Michaeli (Labor) welcomed the visiting Palestinians in fluent Arabic.

Palestinian minister Ashraf Al-Ajami returned the favor by addressing the gathering in equally fluent Hebrew.

While the gathering was reportedly more than cordial, Al-Ajami's message was clear: the Knesset and the Israeli public must pressure the Netanyahu government to finally make peace on Arab terms.

Some Israeli commentators noted that whether or not true peace is possible will be determined by how well the Palestinian parliament reciprocates when Israeli MKs visit Ramallah.

Will the Israeli flag fly at the Palestinian parliament, as the Palestinian flag flew today at the Knesset? Will a full quarter of the Palestinian parliament turn out to meet their Israelis guests, as a full one-fourth of the Knesset turned out to receive the Palestinian delegation?
