Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has cleared the last major obstacle to his planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, winning the support of a key opposition party for the state budget. The Knesset (parliament) is set to approve the budget this week, despite stiff opposition from hawks who oppose the Gaza pullout. Had the budget been voted down, the government would have fallen, forcing early elections. But Sharon has outmaneuvered his opponents time and again, and it appears that the dismantling of 21 Gaza settlements will begin in late July.
