Israel Suspected in Air Strike on Syria

Thursday, October 31, 2013 |  Israel Today Staff

Regional media reported on Thursday that Israel was behind an aerial assault that completely destroyed a Syrian air base along the country's Mediterranean coast overnight.

The strike, which reportedly came from the direction of the sea, took out a Russian-made surface-to-air missile battery and its supporting vehicles and facilities.

Shortly before that, Lebanese media reported that a squadron of Israeli fighter jets had been spotted flying up the coast near Beirut. But, such reports are common in the Lebanese media.

The attack happened in an area of Syria still strongly under the grip of dictator Bashar Assad.

Lebanese, Syrian and other Arab media were certain Israel was behind the strike. Israeli officials refused to comment on the reports.

Israel has on several occasions over the past year attacked sensitive targets in Syria that it felt posed a threat to the security of the Jewish state.
