Five Israeli soldiers were wounded and four Hamas gunmen were killed during a battle in one of the tunnels running under the Gaza border at the weekend.
The tunnel had been discovered weeks ago, and the Israelis were on an operation to demolish it when they were ambushed by armed terrorists.
An explosive device detonated in the tunnel left one Israeli seriously injured, another moderately wounded and three others in light condition. The ensuing gun battle took the lives of at least four Hamas men, including some of the group's top tunnel and rocket experts.
Israel later agreed, via Egyptian mediation, to let Hamas retrieve the bodies of two of its men from the tunnel in question.
Hours later, another tunnel was destroyed from the air by Israeli aircraft.
Hamas has dug a number of large tunnels into southern Israel with the stated intent of carrying out terrorist attacks and abducting Israeli civilians and soldiers.
