Gaza pullout set for implementation

Tuesday, March 29, 2005 |

Sharon will clear the last obstacle to the Gaza pullout, when the Knesset approves the state budget later today. Failure to approve the budget would have toppled the government and put the withdrawal on hold. But Sharon bought off the opposition Shinui party with a 700 million shekel ($160 million) budget allocation for various causes Shinui supports, including universities, science, arts and ecology. Now the withdrawal, known here as “disengagement,” is set to be implemented in July. “The disengagement is going to be carried out as planned,” said Deputy Premier Ehud Olmert. “It reflects the majority of the Knesset and Israeli public opinion. We want disengagement.”
