‘A good first step’

Rabbi Ehud Bandel, who heads the Conservative Movement in Israel, says the Supreme Court ruling on conversions is a good first step. “Rome was not built in one day and neither the religious pluralism in Israel,” Rabbi Bandel told Israel Radio. Orthodox rabbis slammed the ruling, saying it will cause an irreparable split in the Jewish state. "This is very serious,” Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger told the radio. “This is not the way to become a real Jew." The Orthodox believe that the Conservative and Reform movements have changed age-old laws that were handed down to Moses on Mt. Sinai.
