Rabbis urge soldiers to go AWOL

Thursday, March 31, 2005 |

A group of Zionist rabbis and settlement leaders has set off a storm by calling on soldiers not to return to duty after the Passover holiday ends in about a month, on grounds that their service would aid the planned pullout from the Gaza Strip this summer. It’s a highly sensitive issue because the popular view in Israel is that the army, which belongs to the entire nation and is neither left or right-wing, should be left out of the political debate. "This is treason like we've never seen since the establishment of the state," said far left-wing parliamentarian Ron Cohen. The bitter debate is another indication of how the Gaza pullout is tearing the country apart.
