Abbas backs away from crackdown

Saturday, April 02, 2005 |

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas quickly backed down from a promised crackdown on terrorists, despite a shooting attack on his headquarters in Ramallah. Abbas had demanded the arrest of gunmen from the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade, who carried out the shooting and then went on a rampage in the town. Palestinian officials admitted privately that they could not arrest the terrorists because their fellow gunmen would retaliate by attacking Palestinian police. This is a clear indication that Abbas will never carry out his key commitment under the “roadmap” peace plan to dismantle terrorist groups.
