Egyptians went to the polls today and were widely expected to gain the ire of the Obama Administration by voting into power the man who facilitated Egypt’s most recent revolution, former army chief Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Ever since the toppling of former Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak in 2011, Washington seemed to openly support the Muslim Brotherhood’s claim to the throne, much to the consternation of most Egyptians.
When, just one year after the Brotherhood seized power, Egyptians again took to the streets in revolt, the Americans continued to back the Islamists, though a majority were clearly unhappy with the brief presidency of Mohammed Morsi.
That revolution likely would have failed had El-Sisi and the army not intervened on behalf of the demonstrating citizenry. And now, he is poised to become Egypt’s next president, and Egyptians really don’t want to hear a single negative word about it from Obama’s lips.
