A Jerusalem Family's Account of the Missile Attack

It was just before 10 PM on Tuesday when the air raid sirens began to wail in Jerusalem. “I grabbed the dog and ran for the bomb shelter,” recalls Israel Today staffer Nadine Haim Gani.

The 29-year-old immigrant from Germany was at home with her two young sons, aged 3 and 8. She had already taken precautions by putting her children to sleep in the reinforced room that all Israeli homes must have.

“We heard two loud booms,” said Gani. “We don’t know where exactly the missiles landed.”

Gani’s husband was working at his shop when the attack occurred. He was able to seek shelter behind the counter.

“Immediately after, we received many calls and text messages from relatives and friends. Everyone wanted to know that we were safe,” said the resident of the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo.

Mothers of young children are especially facing a difficult time right now. “Everyone tries not to be hysterical, but the fear is there,” Gani said. “We now have to debate whether or not to send the kids to their usual summer camps and programs to maintain a semblance of normality, or keep them safe at home.”

Those children who have been attending summer school and other programs have been practicing safety measures in the event of an air raid.

“The sirens freeze the blood in your veins. I can’t imagine what the residents of southern Israel, especially those with children, are going through,” said Gani. “We all hope this nightmare will be over soon,” she added, concluding, “The safety of our nation now lies on the shoulders of our soldiers. We must stand behind them in prayer.”
