Headlines around the world this week blared the news that Israel had attacked a hospital in the Gaza Strip. Devoid of important context, those headlines bolstered accusations that Israel was purposely targeting civilians in the course of its war against Hamas.
But Israeli forces found that the Waffa Hospital in the Gaza City suburb of Shejaiya had become a major base of operations for Hamas.
Last week, Israeli drones captured photos of Hamas terrorists firing missiles at Israel from a lot adjacent to Waffa Hospital.
After Israeli ground troops entered the area, it was discovered that a large stockpile of missiles and other arms were being stored at and in tunnels running under Waffa Hospital, and that Hamas military leaders were using the medical facility as a headquarters.
In the video below, Israeli soldiers identify machine gun fire coming from the windows of the hospital.
After deciding to attack Waffa Hospital, the Israeli army first has one of its Arabic-speaking soldiers call to verify that all patients and medical staff have been evacuated.
As the bombs fall, large secondary explosions appear to confirm that Waffa Hospital was housing Hamas weapons in violation of international law.
