Tension on the Temple Mount

Monday, April 04, 2005 |

Israeli police say they have intelligence information that Jewish militants are planning a “provocation” at the Temple Mount. “They might attempt a terrorist attack…or violent demonstration…at the Temple Mount to try to thwart the ‘disengagement’ [from Gaza],” Jerusalem Police Chief Ilan Franco told Israel Radio. Since the site is the third holiest place in Islam, any attack or demonstration there could spark violent protests in the Palestinian territories and across the Arab world. Franco said the police will thwart any attempt by Jewish militants to disturb the peace. Police have already banned a demonstration by right-wingers at the Mount that was planned for next week.
