Israel seeks US aid to finance Gaza pullout

Israeli Vice Premier Shimon Peres is on his way to Washington for talks with Vice President Dick Cheney and other US officials. Peres told Army Radio that he'll ask the US to help foot the bill for Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip this summer. Israel has budgeted $1 billion for the pullout, but it's bound to cost a lot more. So Peres is expected to ask the US for $500 million. That’s in addition to the $3 billion in annual US aid Israel already receives. The US has praised the pullout as a step toward peace--and it seems that peace has a heavy price.
