Police tighten security at the Temple Mount

Thursday, April 07, 2005 |
Israeli police will close the Temple Mount to Jews on Sunday to block a rally by Jewish nationalists. Thousands of right-wing Israelis plan to go up to the site, to protest the government's plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip and dismantle 21 settlements there. Police say it's a provocation that could spark Palestinian violence because the mount is home to two mosques that mark the third holiest place in Islam. So the demonstration has been banned. But the demonstration is not the only thing worrying the police. “There are fears of an attack on the Temple Mount," senior Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad told Israel Radio. "We have to use all means available, including unprecedented ones, to prevent any attack on the Temple Mount."
