Restrictions on the Temple Mount

Friday, April 08, 2005 |

Fearing riots, Israel banned all Palestinian men under the age of 40 from attending Friday prayers at the Mosque of Al Aksa on the Temple Mount here in Jerusalem. Police are worried about a planned demonstration by right-wing Israelis at the site on Sunday. The protest is aimed at inflaming tensions, in order to thwart the government's plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip this summer. The Sunday protest is a dry run for a mass demonstration at the Temple Mount planned to coincide with the beginning of the Gaza pullout. Police have banned the demonstration because the holy place is a tinderbox, waiting to explode.
