Israel to leave Gaza settlements in tact

Israel has decided to give the homes of Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority, instead of demolishing them as originally planned. The cost of demolishing the homes, and American criticism of the plan, overcame Israeli opposition. Many Israelis feel that handing the settlements to the Palestinians is a reward for terrorism. They say the images of jubilant Palestinians celebrating on the abandoned property of Jews will become a lasting symbol of Israeli defeat.
