Protesters hoped to thwart Gaza pullout

Sunday, April 10, 2005 |
The purpose of the demonstration was to provoke a violent Palestinian response that would scuttle Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip this summer and evacuate 8,000 settlers. “If Jews are not allowed to live in parts of Israel, than what do we need Israel for,” demonstrator Cynthia Freedman told “israel today” at the scene. “It’s a violation of Israeli law and human rights to throw these people out of their homes.” While the demonstrators did not succeed in sparking riots, they did tie up the security forces. They hope that when the time of the Gaza pullout comes, similar protests will stretch the police and army so thin that they will not be able to carry out the withdrawal.
