Vanunu back on trial

Wednesday, April 13, 2005 |

Israeli Nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was in a Jerusalem court today, facing charges for violating the terms of his release from prison last year. He served 18 years for espionage and treason after he revealed secrets of Israel's nuclear weapons program to Britain’s “Sunday Times” newspaper. Prosecutors said Vanunu, a former nuclear technician, gave new interviews to the foreign media, despite a ban on contacts with foreigners. The ban was imposed because Israel fears he could reveal more nuclear secrets. "I have no more secrets,” Vanunu said. “Only Israel has secrets about its atomic program…It's a shameful day for Israel's democracy, that a man who served 18 years, a full sentence, is brought to court for exercising his freedom of speech." Vanunu’s revelations led experts to conclude that Israel has between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads.
