More settlements to be axed after Gaza pullout

Friday, April 15, 2005 |
Israel is reportedly planning further withdrawals in Judea and Samaria after it pulls out of Gaza. The country’s biggest newspaper, “Yediot Ahronot,” said Prime Minister Ariel Sharon might remove isolated settlements unilaterally if a final peace agreement with the Palestinians appears out of reach. At the same time, Sharon would expand major settlement blocs and attach them to Israel. The Prime Minister’s Office denied the report, but it is in line with Sharon’s strategy. He doubts that the sides can bridge the gaps on tough issues like the status of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees, so he's drawing Israel's borders unilaterally.
