Three-week Gaza pullout delay likely

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has recommended delaying the Gaza pullout for three weeks, meaning the target date would be August 15th. The recommendation is expected to win government approval. The official reason is that the original date falls during the three week morning for Tisha B’Av, marking the destruction of the two Biblical Temples. But some Cabinet ministers admit that the government is also buying time because it hasn’t prepared housing and compensation for the evacuated settlers. Sharon denied charges that the government is vacillating. "The disengagement will be carried out," he told Army Radio. "Whoever thinks this will open the way to delays or not implementing [the pullout]…is simply wrong."
