Weizman laid to rest

Flags flew at half staff today as former Israeli President Ezer Weizman was laid to rest following his death at the age of 80. Weizman typified the “sabra”--the native-born Israeli who is tough on the outside, but sweet on the inside. “He loved the nation and the nation loved him,” said Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Weizman was a decorated pilot who turned the air force into the powerful machine that destroyed the Egyptian air force in the Six Day War in 1967. He later played an instrumental role in the 1979 Camp David Accords, the peace treaty with Egypt that was Israel's first with an Arab state. Senior officials led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon attended the funeral in Weizman’s hometown of Or Akiva.
