Abbas appoints new security chief

Wednesday, April 27, 2005 |

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has appointed a tough new security chief, who helped launch a crackdown against Islamic terrorists in the 1990s. Rashid Abu Shbak, who will be the head of preventive security, has been instructed to restore law and order. Abbas is under pressure from the US and Israel to crack down on terrorist groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who are responsible for hundreds of suicide bombings and shooting attacks. But so far, Abbas has had no success in seizing control from the well-armed terrorists who rule the streets.
