Ultra-Orthodox Jews riot in Jerusalem

Wednesday, April 27, 2005 |

Israeli police clashed with thousands of ultra-Orthodox protesters in Jerusalem, who were angry over what they described as the desecration of ancient Jewish graves by a road construction project. Demonstrators blocked streets with burning trash cans, and threw rocks, bottles and other objects at police. The clash underscores the tension between an ultra-Orthodox community observing ancient Jewish laws and a modern and largely secular Jewish state.
