Poll: Israelis Prefer Clinton, Unsure About Trump

Monday, March 14, 2016 |  Israel Today Staff

A survey published by the Israeli news portal Walla! over the weekend revealed that a sizable plurality of Israelis would prefer to see Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents chose Clinton, while Donald Trump trailed with 23 percent. A mere 7 percent picked Jewish candidate Bernie Sanders, and Republican challengers Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio scored just 5 and 4 percent, respectively.

When asked specifically which candidate would best serve Israel’s interests, the results were a little tighter, with Trump chosen by 25 percent of respondents to Clinton’s 24 percent. Sanders, Cruz and Rubio garnered 6 percent each.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren said he was unsurprised by the broad support for Clinton, noting that for Israelis she’s “a known commodity. The Clintons have always been popular here.”

Trump, meanwhile, remains a “very big question mark,” noted Oren.

Unsurprisingly, Trump scored much better among Likud voters, while Clinton was far more popular with left-wing Israeli voters.
