Israel cracks down on Gaza pullout opponents

Monday, May 09, 2005 |

Israel has put a militant Jewish settler in administrative detention for five months, meaning that he can be held without trial. The measure is usually used against Palestinians. Officials say Neria Ofan, 34, is suspected of planning violent opposition to the government’s planned pullout from the Gaza Strip this summer. He is from Yitzhar, one of the most militant settlements in Judea and Samaria. The army wants to put dozens of far right-wing settlers in administrative detention to prevent violence. In a related development, the army has jailed its first reservist for refusing military duty in protest over the Gaza withdrawal plan. Arkadi Moter, a settler, was jailed for 21 days.
