Fearing riots, Israel tightened security at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City, the site of the Biblical Temples and the holiest place in Judaism. Tension ran high following rumors that Israeli nationalists planned to march on the site, which is home to the Mosque of Al Aksa, the third holiest place in Islam. Palestinian Moslems vowed to protect it with thousands of people. In response, Israel barred all Palestinians under the age of 45 from the compound. Police scuffled with Palestinian stone throwers outside the Old City walls, but there was no serious violence. The Jewish protest did not materialize. But Israeli nationalists have vowed to stir up trouble at the Temple Mount, in an attempt to thwart the Gaza pullout.
