Police interrogated Israel's Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, after his wife, son and daughter were arrested on charges of kidnapping and assault. Police say they abducted and beat a 17-year-old ultra-Orthodox youth because they objected to his romantic relationship with the rabbi's 18-year-old daughter. The rabbi told reporters he was not involved and would cooperate with the investigation. He expressed regret over harm caused to the youth. Anshel Feffer, an expert on ultra-Orthodox Jews, says this kind of violence is not uncommon. “Usually a few thugs are sent to rough the guy up and to give him a very stern warning that he should keep his distance from the girl,” Feffer told Israel Television. But since this case involves Israel's chief rabbi, it's the talk of the town.
