Tens of thousands of jubilant people packed a Tel Aviv park to celebrate Israel’s victory in the European Cup basketball tournament for the second straight year. Maccabi Tel Aviv won Europe's most prestigious basketball championship, defeating Spain 90-78. The game was played on neutral ground in Moscow. Maccabi players attended the celebration wearing the team colors: yellow and blue shirts and scarves. “We thank God and the fans!” said Maccabi star Anthony Parker, an African American Christian. Israeli President Moshe Katzav was at the game. "This is a great present Maccabi has given to the people of Israel for Independence Day," Katsav said. Israel's Independence Day is Thursday. Maccabi Tel Aviv has won the European cup five times.
