Israel Prepares to Remember Her Fallen

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel’s Memorial Day begins Tuesday at sundown. A nationwide siren will sound for one minute at 8 pm, during which most of the country will come to a literal standstill as we remember those who have fallen in our defense.

Since its modern rebirth, 23,447 young men and women have perished defending Israel. That number includes 68 Israeli soldiers and police killed in the line of duty over the past year.

Memorial Day also commemorates victims of terrorism. 2,576 Israelis have been killed in acts of terror, 32 of them over the past year.

The sirens will again sound Wednesday morning at 11 am, after which an estimated 1.5 million Israelis (out of a population of 8.5 million) will take part in memorial ceremonies around the country.

It is a sad fact of Israel’s present reality that nearly every citizen knows someone who has been killed in this tragic and ongoing conflict.
