Abbas to meet Bush

Sunday, May 15, 2005 |

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will meet President Bush at the White House on May 26, his first visit since being elected in January. It marks a change in course for Bush, who shunned the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat because of his involvement in terrorism. Palestinian officials say Abbas will press demands that Israel comply with the “roadmap” peace plan and halt the expansion of settlements. He will also ask Bush to press Israel to hand over more towns in Judea and Samaria to the Palestinian Authority. But Abbas is likely to face tough questioning over his failure to comply with the roadmap’s key demand to dismantle terrorist groups.
