Israel Helps Cyprus Battle Monster Wild Fire

Monday, June 20, 2016 |  Israel Today Staff

Israel has sent a third of its aerial firefighting fleet to aid Cyprus in battling the largest wild fire to plague the island nation in recent years.

The fire began late last week, and on Saturday Israel dispatched three firefighting planes to aid the Cypriots.

“Last night I ordered that three of our firefighting aircraft, out of our fleet of 13 or 14, be sent to help them, and the planes are now in Cyprus. This is part of the regional arrangement we have made with Cyprus and Greece about emergency assistance. I am pleased that we are able to extend this assistance,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at Sunday’s cabinet meeting.

The fire looked to be somewhat under control on Sunday, but overnight winds bolstered the blaze.

On Monday, the Israeli army sent another two planes to Cyprus, which only has a single firefighting plane of its own.
