One-quarter of Gaza settlers ready to leave

Tuesday, May 17, 2005 |
More than one-quarter of Jewish families in Gaza have accepted the government’s offer to relocate to southern Israel. Gaza settlement leader Yoav Elul said 430 of 1,600 families have signed on, and an additional 600 are expected to do so by the end of the month. “We need an insurance policy,” Elul said, adding that the pullout appears inevitable. The government has offered to move the Gaza settlers en masse to nearby Nitzanim, a pristine coastal area. But there is a split in the settlement leadership, with opponents of the Nitzanim plan accusing those who accepted it of capitulation. (We’ll have several articles on the Gaza pullout in the June edition of “israel today” magazine).
