Intifada III?

Tuesday, May 17, 2005 |

The head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is pessimistic about the prospects for peace after a three-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian areas. "We will leave here deeply concerned with what we have found,” Pierre Lellouche told reporters. "All the elements of the next cycle of violence are in place…Both sides are talking past each other." Despite the three-month old cease-fire, the peace process is stuck. Israel has frozen further handovers of Palestinian cities in Judea and Samaria because Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has not kept his commitment to disarm terrorist groups. And the Palestinians are furious over Israel’s expansion of settlement blocs. Israeli generals and analysts widely concur that following the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the Palestinians will launch a new intifada (uprising) to force an Israeli pullback from Judea and Samaria.
