Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has dubbed his Gaza withdrawal “disengagement,” meaning that Israel is separating from the territory and its residents and will, in effect, have nothing to do with them. But recommendations by a top general indicate that this is not “disengagement” at all. The coordinator of Israeli government activities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, Major-General Yosef Mishlev, has urged the government to allow 50,000 Palestinian laborers into Israel and that Israel should help rehabilitate the Gaza economy. Israel will also continue to supply water and electricity to Gaza. Not exactly a divorce. He also recommended handing the settlements intact to the Palestinians.
