Abbas heads to Washington

Tuesday, May 24, 2005 |

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is on his way to Washington, where he’ll have his first meeting with President Bush at the White House on Thursday. It probably won’t be an easy meeting for Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen. "The people in Washington know full well that Abu Mazen really hasn’t delivered the goods," said Israeli spokesman Zalman Shoval. Namely he has not kept his commitment to dismantle Palestinian terror groups, as demanded by the "roadmap" peace plan. And the US position is that until he does, there’s no chance of progress toward peace.
