Abbas in Washington

Wednesday, May 25, 2005 |
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is in Washington, ahead of his first White House meeting with President Bush tomorrow. Abbas will urge President Bush to work for the creation of a Palestinian state. "I hope that this meeting will lead to putting President Bush’s vision of a two state solution to a realistic political track," said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. But Abbas is likely to face US pressure to keep his commitment under the "roadmap" peace plan to dismantle terrorist groups. Israel says until he does, there can be no negotiations on a Palestinian state.
